The best flip cell phone in the US right now is the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 8. The 256GB unlocked model (SM-F776U) has a regular price of $1,199.99 on Samsung's own store, and on 17 October 2026 Samsung, Best Buy and Amazon were all selling it for $1,049.99. Samsung's page calls that up to $150 off without a trade-in, valid 9 October to 2 November 2026 while supplies last. If that is more than you want to spend on a phone that folds, the Motorola Razr 2026 does the same job for $799.99 and carries a bigger battery. And if you came here for a cheap flip with real buttons, there is no easy pick this week: the Nokia 2780 Flip was sold out at Best Buy and Target on 17 October.
Best Flip Cell Phone 2026: 3 Picks and US Prices
Three foldable flip phones worth buying in the US, from $799.99 to $1,199.99, and where cheap keypad flips stand this week. Each pick is priced at its regular unlocked, outright figure, checked 17 October 2026, and every sale is labeled where it appears.

Nerdspec has not tested these phones. This guide works from maker spec sheets, retailer listings we opened on 17 October 2026, and published reviews we credit to the outlet that ran them. Prices here move weekly, so each one carries the date we checked it.
Best flip cell phone in 2026: the short list
- Best overall: Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 8, $1,199.99 regular price at Samsung.com ($1,049.99 there until 2 November), score 8.8. Samsung promises up to seven OS upgrades and seven years of security updates, the longest software promise in this guide, with a 4.1in cover screen and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy.
- Best cover screen: Motorola Razr+ 2026, $1,099.99 at Best Buy, score 8.6. A 4.0in outer display at 165Hz under Gorilla Glass Victus, plus 45W wired charging.
- Best value 2026 foldable: Motorola Razr 2026, $799.99 at Best Buy, score 8.5. A 4,800mAh cell, the biggest battery of the three picks, for $400 under the Samsung's regular price.
The price on each line above is the regular outright price of the phone unlocked, with no trade-in, plan or membership attached. Sales are labeled with the store and, where the store gives one, the end date. On 17 October 2026 Amazon matched Best Buy and Motorola.com on both Razr picks. Cheap keypad flips get their own sections below, without a pick this time: the Nokia 2780 Flip was sold out at Best Buy and Target, and the unlocked one we found in stock is poorly rated.
Foldable flip or basic flip: which do you actually want?
Two very different products answer to the same search. A foldable flip is a full Android smartphone with a flexible inner panel, a second screen on the lid, and a regular price between $799.99 and $1,499.99 for this year's models. A basic flip is a feature phone: a keypad, a small fixed screen, calls and texts, and a price that is usually under $100. People who type best flip smartphone almost always want the first; people buying for a parent, a work phone or a deliberate step away from apps want the second. The decision is not about the hinge, it is about whether you want app notifications on the outer screen or want them gone.
Best overall flip phone: Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 8
Buy the Z Flip 8 if you intend to keep the phone for years rather than upgrade with the carrier cycle. The 256GB unlocked model's regular price is $1,199.99. On 17 October 2026 it was $1,049.99 at Samsung.com under the promotion above, which needs no trade-in and ends on 2 November. Best Buy had the same $1,049.99, shown as "Save $150" with no end date, and Amazon listed it at $1,049.99 too.
The hardware: Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, 12GB of RAM, 256GB or 512GB of storage, a 6.9in OLED inner screen at 2520 x 1080 and 120Hz, a 4.1in FlexWindow cover screen, a 4,300mAh battery, 25W wired and 15W wireless charging, 180g, and IP48 dust and water resistance. The cameras are 50MP and 12MP on the back with a 10MP front camera.
What actually separates it is support. Samsung's US page promises "up to 7x OS upgrades and security updates". Motorola's 2026 Razr phones get three Android OS updates and four years of security patches, according to BGR, which cites Motorola's support site for the four years. Over a five-year ownership window that difference is the whole argument.
The catch is charging. Tech Advisor called 25W charging "painfully slow" in its assessment of the previous Galaxy Z Flip 7, and Samsung has kept 25W on the Flip 8. Its 4,300mAh battery is also the smallest of the three picks. Stuff wrote that the Flip8 "improves on its predecessor by the thinnest of margins on the hardware front, which makes the high asking price harder to swallow", while crediting its improved software with making the outer screen almost as usable as Motorola's.
Best value 2026 foldable: Motorola Razr 2026
The Razr 2026 is the flip to buy if you want this year's folding phone without the flagship bill. The 8GB/256GB unlocked model was $799.99 on 17 October 2026 at Best Buy, Motorola.com and Amazon.
Motorola spends the money where you touch it. The inner screen is a 6.9in foldable LTPO AMOLED at 1080 x 2640 and 120Hz, rated to 3000 nits peak. The battery is 4,800mAh of silicon-carbon, charging at 30W wired and 15W wireless. It weighs 188g, carries IP48, and runs Android 16 on a MediaTek Dimensity 7450X with 8GB of RAM. The cameras are a 50MP f/1.7 main with optical stabilization, a 50MP ultrawide and a 32MP front, so on paper the ultrawide and selfie sensors outresolve the Samsung's 12MP and 10MP. We have not shot with either phone, so that is a spec difference, not a photographic verdict.
Two real compromises. The Dimensity 7450X is a midrange chip, not a flagship one, and the cover screen is 3.6in at 90Hz where the Razr+ runs 4.0in at 165Hz. Add the three-update software policy and this is a phone to buy for three years, not seven.
The deal to know about: the Motorola Razr Ultra 2025. Last year's top Razr, in its 512GB unlocked version, was $699.99 new at Best Buy on 17 October 2026, marked down from a regular $1,299.99 with no end date shown, and $799.99 at Motorola.com. On paper it gives more than the Razr 2026 for the same money or less: a Snapdragon 8 Elite, 16GB of RAM, a 4.0in 165Hz cover screen, and 68W wired and 30W wireless charging, per GSMArena's spec sheet. What it gives up is time. It launched in 2025 on Android 15 with three years of OS updates and four years of security updates, per Android Central, so its support ends about a year before the Razr 2026's, and its 4,700mAh battery is 100mAh smaller. If Best Buy still has it at $699.99 and you expect to replace the phone within about two years, the Ultra 2025 is the better buy. The Razr 2026 stays the pick because its price is not a sale and its updates run longer.
Best cover screen: Motorola Razr+ 2026
The Razr+ 2026 exists for people who want to use the phone closed. The 12GB/256GB unlocked model was $1,099.99 on 17 October 2026 at Best Buy, Motorola.com and Amazon.
The 4.0in outer display runs at 1272 x 1080 and 165Hz behind Gorilla Glass Victus, and the 6.9in inner panel also runs 165Hz, the highest refresh rate of the three picks. Charging is 45W wired, the fastest of the three picks, with 15W wireless and 5W reverse wired. Inside is a Snapdragon 8s Gen 3, 12GB of RAM and 256GB of UFS 4.0 storage, with a 4,500mAh battery, 189g on the scale and IP48. Its 50MP main camera has optical stabilization, as the Razr 2026's does.
The price is where it gets awkward. At $1,099.99 it is $100 under the Samsung's regular price, but until 2 November it costs $50 more than the $1,049.99 that Samsung, Best Buy and Amazon were charging for the Z Flip 8. It is also $300 more than the Razr 2026 for the same three Android updates and four years of patches. The cover screen and the 45W charging have to carry that gap on their own. For most people they do not, which is why the Samsung takes best overall and the Razr+ takes a narrower title.
What happened to the Nokia 2780 Flip
If you came here for the Nokia 2780 Flip, US retailers still list it as a new phone, but on 17 October 2026 we could not find one with stock. Best Buy listed the black and blue versions new but Sold Out: the black one at a $94.99 clearance price and the blue one at $89.99. Target listed it new at $89.99, out of stock online and in every store. Amazon's red and blue listings showed no current price. We could not confirm the price or stock on HMD's own US store or at Tello that day, so check those two before you settle for something else.
The Nokia 2780 Flip is the cheap flip people search for. On 17 October 2026, Best Buy and Target had none to sell.
It was this guide's budget pick when we first researched it on 29 September 2026, and the case for it is simple: an unlocked keypad flip for $90 to $100, on sale since 2022, that Amazon shoppers rate 3.7 out of 5 from about 1,900 ratings, a far deeper pool than the phone below has.
If you need a basic flip today: Schok VoltFlip, with a warning
The Schok VoltFlip is in stock, unlocked and under $100, and that is most of the case for it. It was $99.99 with Add to Cart at Best Buy on 17 October 2026, and $99.99 on Schok's own store, which shows it marked down from $119.99 with no end date given.
Schok lists a 3.2in internal TFT at 480 x 800 and 500 nits, a 2.0in color outer screen, a 1,650mAh battery, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage with microSD to 32GB, an 8MP rear camera with autofocus and flash, USB-C charging and a 1.2W amplifier. It is a 4G LTE phone with no 5G, sold unlocked for US LTE networks with its supported bands listed. We opened Schok's full spec table and it publishes no weight, no IP rating and no charging wattage.
The warning: Best Buy shoppers rate it between 2.1 and 2.5 out of 5, from 10 to 14 reviews depending on which Best Buy page you read on 17 October 2026. That is a small pool, but it is not a good one. Buy it only if you need an unlocked keypad flip now rather than in a few weeks, and buy it from a store with a return window.
What flip phones cost in the US right now
On 17 October 2026 the US ladder for this year's new, unlocked clamshell foldables at regular prices runs $799.99 for the Razr 2026, $1,099.99 for the Razr+ 2026, $1,199.99 for the Galaxy Z Flip 8 and $1,499.99 for the 512GB Motorola Razr Ultra 2026, the price at both Best Buy and Motorola.com. Two discounts change that picture: the Z Flip 8 at $1,049.99 until 2 November, and the Razr Ultra 2025 at $699.99 on sale at Best Buy. Unlocked keypad flips sit at about $90 to $100, when you can find them. Motorola's Razr Fold is a book-style foldable, so it is not in this guide, and we did not price Samsung's previous-generation Galaxy Z Flip7 FE for this update.
Some figures you will see are not device prices. Motorola's US pages advertise a new device "for as low as $1 with eligible moto trade-in", carrier prices assume a plan or an installment contract, and listings marked renewed are refurbished phones. None of those tells you what the phone costs outright.
We found no new clamshell flip reaching the US market between 29 September and 17 October 2026, so no pick has been superseded. The Razr 2026 family was announced on 29 April 2026 and went on sale in May, and the Galaxy Z Flip 8 was announced on 22 July and went on sale in the US on 7 August. Apple's iPhone Duo, shown on 9 September, is a book-style fold, not a clamshell.
Flip phones for seniors
The best flip phone for seniors is usually the one with the biggest buttons and the loudest earpiece, not the one with the best chip. That points at a keypad flip, not a foldable: a Razr 2026 at $799.99 is a worse phone for that job than a $100 keypad flip.
Best Buy's flip listing had two cheaper options with strings attached on 17 October 2026. The Lively Jitterbug Flip2 was $39.99, on sale from $79.99 with no end date shown, and Lively's own store says it requires a Lively plan at activation, so that is the handset price, not the cost of owning the phone. The Tracfone BLU Flex was $20.99, on sale from $29.99, and is a Tracfone prepaid device. SeniorLiving.org, which says it orders and tests the phones it ranks, names Consumer Cellular's IRIS Easy Flip its top pick, and that one is sold with Consumer Cellular service. If you need an unlocked phone you can move between carriers, look for the Nokia 2780 Flip in stock, or weigh the VoltFlip's big backlit keys and 1.2W amplifier against its ratings.
Durability, the crease and carrier compatibility
All three foldable picks carry IP48: immersion to 1.5m for 30 minutes, but only solid particles larger than 1mm, so fine sand and grit, which is what ends up in a hinge, are not covered. All three have a visible crease across the inner panel. We have not run hinge-cycle testing, so if hinge durability decides it for you, buy from a retailer with a generous return window.
Unlocked is not a guarantee of carrier support: check your carrier's own device-compatibility page against the exact model before you buy, particularly on Verizon. And for anyone searching for a flip phone with a keyboard: neither the three foldable picks nor the Nokia 2780 Flip and VoltFlip has a physical QWERTY keyboard.
