MacBook Neo vs MacBook Air M4: The M4 Is Not Sold New

Five Indian retailers still list the 13-inch MacBook Air M4 and none will sell you one, so the real choice is a MacBook Neo from ₹71,990 or an M5 Air at ₹1,38,990.

Nerdspec topic card headed Versus: MacBook Neo vs MacBook Air M4, with a line saying the 13-inch M4 Air is no longer sold new in India

The honest answer to MacBook Neo vs MacBook Air M4 is that five Indian retailers still list the 13-inch Air M4 and not one will sell you one. On 30 September 2026 every listing we opened was out of stock, discontinued or unavailable. So the real choice is a MacBook Neo, ₹71,990 for 256GB or ₹80,990 for 512GB on Amazon.in, against a MacBook Air M5 at ₹1,38,990. Take the Neo for browser tabs, documents and code. Pay for the M5 Air if you need 16GB of memory or the ports.

MacBook Neo vs MacBook Air M4: the short verdict

  • Availability: MacBook Neo, by walkover. The 13-inch Air M4 is listed but not sellable, and nothing else matters if you cannot buy it.
  • Memory: MacBook Air M4. 16GB standard, configurable to 32GB, against 8GB with no upgrade option at all.
  • Ports and storage speed: MacBook Air M4, and it is not close. MagSafe 3 and two Thunderbolt 4 ports at 40Gb/s, against one USB 3 and one USB 2 port.
  • Battery: MacBook Air M4. 53.8Wh against 36.5Wh, and 18 claimed hours of video streaming against 16.
  • Price: MacBook Neo. ₹71,990 buys a current Mac. The M4 Air is still listed at ₹97,900, on pages that cannot complete a sale.

Five stores list the 13-inch MacBook Air M4 and none will sell it

Apple India carries M5 Airs only, from ₹1,49,900, and Reliance Digital's nine MacBook Airs are all M5. Everywhere else the M4 page is still up. On 30 September 2026:

  • Flipkart, ₹97,900. MC6T4HN/A, spec table "34.54 cm (13.6 Inch)" at 2560 x 1664, so this is the 13-inch machine. Its structured data marks it out of stock, with Notify Me in place of Add to Cart.
  • Croma, ₹97,900. SKU 314075, a 13.6-inch M4, and the page still shows Add to Cart. It is not buyable: Croma's catalogue data marks the product discontinued, and Croma's delivery and stock service answers "product not found" for the SKU at Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru and Kolkata pincodes while answering "stock available" for the Neo and the M5 Air the same day.
  • Amazon.in. ASIN B0DZD8QJBH reads "Currently unavailable", no price, no add to cart.
  • Imagine, an Apple Premium Reseller: ₹97,900 and ₹1,07,900. Both buttons read Notify Me.
  • iPlanet, an Apple Premium Partner: ₹1,19,900 for MC6U4HN/A, marked Out of Stock.

So the ₹97,900 the price trackers quote is real and current. It is also a shelf price on a shelf with nothing on it.

A price you can read but cannot pay is not a price. It is a record of what you missed.

One M4 Air is still buyable new here, and it is the bigger one. Flipkart's MC7C4HN/A at ₹1,31,900 and MC6L4HN/A at ₹1,51,900 both give their screen size as 38.86 cm, which is 15.3 inches. The first is out of stock; the second was in stock on 30 September 2026 with Add to Cart live. Shop by title alone and you can buy a 15-inch laptop at ₹1,51,900 when you wanted a 13-inch one.

MacBook Neo price in India after the June 2026 rise

The Neo went on sale on 11 March 2026 at ₹69,900 and ₹79,900, per ETV Bharat. Apple raised Indian Mac prices in late June. Business Today reported the base model going from ₹69,900 to ₹79,900; Apple India now lists the 512GB at ₹89,900, the same ₹10,000 above its launch price. Any tracker still quoting ₹69,900 is nine months out of date. Retailers have not all followed Apple up. Checked 30 September 2026:

  • Neo 8GB and 256GB: ₹71,990 on Amazon.in, against ₹76,490 at Croma and ₹79,900 at Apple India, so Amazon saves ₹7,910 on Apple and ₹4,500 on Croma.
  • Neo 8GB and 512GB: ₹80,990 on Amazon.in, in stock, against ₹83,490 at Croma and ₹89,900 at Apple India and Imagine. Its 4.7 stars from 281 ratings is a variation-family aggregate shown identically on the 256GB Neo, so read it as a score for the line, not one configuration.

A18 Pro vs M4: what the chip difference means

The A18 Pro is an iPhone chip in a laptop: 6 CPU cores, 2 of them performance cores, a 5-core GPU with ray tracing, 60GB/s of bandwidth. The M4 has 10 CPU cores, 4 of them performance. Four performance cores against two is the number to hold on to. For one browser, one editor and a terminal the Neo will not feel slow; the gap opens on a long compile, a video export or a container build. Jeff Geerling, who owns an M4 Air and bought a Neo in March 2026, came away positive on the machine, calling the speakers great and the trackpad better than any other sub-$600 laptop. His reservation was the ports.

8GB vs 16GB memory: the difference that matters most

The Neo ships with 8GB of unified memory and Apple lists no upgrade. Not a costlier option, none. The Air M4 started at 16GB and went to 32GB; the M5 Air starts at 16GB. 8GB covers a browser, Mail, Slack, Pages, calls and streaming. It stops working when several heavy things run at once: Docker plus a JetBrains IDE plus a browser, Xcode with a simulator, a 4K Final Cut timeline. It is the one specification you cannot fix later, because the memory is soldered and sold in one size. If you might need 16GB in the four or five years you own this laptop, the answer is the M5 Air.

Ports, storage speed and battery: the Neo's biggest compromise

Apple gives the Neo one USB 3 USB-C port at 10Gb/s and one USB 2 USB-C port capped at 480Mb/s, plus a 3.5mm jack. No MagSafe, no Thunderbolt, and one external display at up to 4K 60Hz, which rules out a docking station or a two-monitor desk. The Air M4 has MagSafe 3 plus two Thunderbolt 4 ports at 40Gb/s, so both data ports stay free while it charges. Geerling called that his biggest turn-off, noting one port is USB 3 and the other USB 2, something he had not seen on a Mac in years.

Plug in power and one port is left. If it runs a monitor, your external drive goes on the USB 2 port at 480Mb/s, about 80 times slower than the Air's Thunderbolt ports, which turns a photo library backup into an evening.

Internal storage is the gap the spec sheets hide, and it is what Wired's comparison leads on: "The MacBook Air's internal SSD is much, much faster than the MacBook Neo." Apple publishes no read or write figure for either, so there is no number to quote, but it shows in file copies and anything that swaps once 8GB runs out. Battery is simpler: 36.5Wh and a 20W adapter on the Neo for a claimed 16 hours of video streaming, against 53.8Wh, 70W fast charging and 18 hours on the Air M4.

Display, camera and build compared

The Neo's 13.0-inch Liquid Retina panel runs 2408 x 1506 at 219 pixels per inch and 500 nits; the Air M4's 13.6-inch panel runs 2560 x 1664 at 224 ppi, also 500 nits. Slightly less space and sharpness on the Neo, the same brightness, no high refresh rate on either. The camera is a clearer loss: 1080p FaceTime HD against the Air's 12MP Center Stage with Desk View. Touch ID is on the 512GB MacBook Neo only. The 256GB ships with a plain Magic Keyboard, and Geerling, who bought that one, described getting a lock key instead. Touch ID was standard across the M4 Air range.

MacBook Neo vs Air vs Pro: where each one stops making sense

The M5 Air is the only MacBook Air an Indian buyer can purchase new, so anyone who wants an Air is really choosing it: ₹1,38,990 on Amazon.in, ₹1,39,490 at Croma and ₹1,49,900 at Apple India on 30 September 2026, for 16GB and 512GB. The gap is no longer the roughly ₹20,000 that separated a Neo from an M4 Air. It is about ₹58,000 over a 512GB Neo, the difference between one Mac and a Mac plus a good monitor.

The MacBook Pro is a different budget again, from ₹2,39,900 at Apple India on 30 September 2026 with M5, M5 Pro and M5 Max options. That buys active cooling and sustained performance the fanless Airs cannot hold, which earns its money on long exports, 3D work or heavy compiles, and is more than three MacBook Neos for work one Neo already does. Neo for light work, M5 Air for memory and ports, Pro only when a job is waiting on the machine.

Already own an M1, M2 or M3 Air? Whether the switch is worth it

Keep it. Apple's spec sheets give the M1, M2 and M3 Airs two Thunderbolt or USB 4 ports at 40Gb/s, MagSafe 3 from the M2 on, an 8-core CPU against the Neo's 6, and the same 8GB base. The M3 Air also carries the same 13.6-inch 2560 x 1664 panel as the M4 Air and could be configured to 16GB or 24GB, which the Neo cannot be at any price. Moving to a Neo gains a newer chip and Apple Intelligence support and costs port speed, memory headroom and expansion. If the battery is finished or 8GB is the bottleneck, spend on the M5 Air's 16GB instead. Later M2 Airs shipped with 16GB as standard, so check yours first.

Who should buy the MacBook Neo, and who should hold out

Buy the 256GB Neo at ₹71,990 for browsing, documents, study and light code, if two USB-C ports and no Touch ID are livable. Buy the 512GB at ₹80,990 for room for files and the only Neo with a fingerprint sensor. Buy the M5 Air at ₹1,38,990 if you need 16GB, Thunderbolt, MagSafe or a better camera. All three prices are Amazon.in on 30 September 2026.

Do not chase a new 13-inch MacBook Air M4. Five stores list it and not one will ship it, and a refurbished or grey-market unit near ₹97,900 is poor value next to an ₹80,990 Neo with a current warranty. Prices move; check before you pay.

Frequently asked

Can you still buy the MacBook Air M4 in India?

Not the 13-inch one. On 30 September 2026 five retailers still listed it and none could sell it: Flipkart (MC6T4HN/A, ₹97,900, out of stock), Croma (SKU 314075, ₹97,900, marked discontinued in Croma's own catalogue data), Amazon.in (B0DZD8QJBH, Currently unavailable), Imagine (₹97,900 and ₹1,07,900, both Notify Me) and iPlanet (₹1,19,900, Out of Stock). Apple India and Reliance Digital list M5 Airs only.

Is the MacBook Neo better than the MacBook Air M4?

No, on specification the Air M4 wins on memory, ports, storage speed, battery and camera. The Neo wins the only round that matters in India now, which is that you can actually buy one, from ₹71,990 on Amazon.in (30 September 2026).

How much does the MacBook Neo cost in India now?

₹71,990 for 256GB and ₹80,990 for 512GB on Amazon.in on 30 September 2026, ₹76,490 and ₹83,490 at Croma, and ₹79,900 and ₹89,900 at Apple India. The launch prices of ₹69,900 and ₹79,900 ended with Apple's June 2026 India price rise.

Does the MacBook Neo have Touch ID?

Only the 512GB model. Apple's spec sheet lists Touch ID as not available on the 256GB MacBook Neo, which ships with a plain Magic Keyboard, and lists a Magic Keyboard with Touch ID on the 512GB model.

Is 8GB memory on the MacBook Neo enough for coding?

For web and scripting work with an editor, a local server and a browser, yes. For containers, a heavy IDE, Android emulators or iOS simulators, no, and the Neo's 8GB cannot be upgraded at purchase or later, so pick the 16GB MacBook Air M5 instead.

Why do Flipkart listings still show a MacBook Air M4?

Because Flipkart carries three of them and only one can be bought. MC6T4HN/A is the 13.6-inch model at ₹97,900, spec table 34.54 cm at 2560 x 1664, and its own page data marked it out of stock on 30 September 2026 with a Notify Me button. MC7C4HN/A at ₹1,31,900 and MC6L4HN/A at ₹1,51,900 are both 15.3-inch machines at 2880 x 1864; the first is out of stock and the second was in stock with Add to Cart. Check the screen size line before you pay.

Can I still buy a MacBook Air M4 from Croma?

No, although the page looks live. Croma's 13.6-inch M4 Air page (SKU 314075) still shows ₹97,900 and an Add to Cart button on 30 September 2026, but Croma's catalogue data marks the product discontinued, and Croma's delivery and stock service returns "product not found" for that SKU at Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru and Kolkata pincodes while returning stock available for the MacBook Neo and the M5 Air.

How does the MacBook Neo compare with a MacBook Air M3?

The M3 Air keeps the advantages the Neo gives up: an 8-core CPU against the Neo's 6, two Thunderbolt or USB 4 ports at 40Gb/s, MagSafe 3, a 13.6-inch 2560 x 1664 display and memory configurable to 16GB or 24GB. The Neo's answer is a newer chip, Apple Intelligence support and a current price from ₹71,990. If you already own an M3 Air, moving to a Neo is a sideways move with a bill attached.

Should I buy the MacBook Neo or pay more for the MacBook Air M5?

Pay for the M5 Air at ₹1,38,990 on Amazon.in if you need 16GB of memory, Thunderbolt or MagSafe. Otherwise take the Neo and keep the roughly ₹58,000, because the gap is now far wider than the one that separated the Neo from the old M4 Air.

Which is better for students, the MacBook Neo or a MacBook Air?

The MacBook Neo 256GB at ₹71,990 covers coursework, documents, research and lectures without strain. A MacBook Air only earns the extra money if the course involves video editing, containers or mobile development.

Does the MacBook Neo have MagSafe or Thunderbolt?

Neither. Apple's spec sheet gives it one USB 3 USB-C port at 10Gb/s and one USB 2 USB-C port at 480Mb/s, plus a 3.5mm jack. Charging uses one of those two ports, and it drives a single external display at up to 4K 60Hz.

Is the MacBook Neo faster than the MacBook Air M2?

Nerdspec has not benchmarked either machine, so we will not claim a figure. On Apple's published specifications the A18 Pro has a 6-core CPU against the M2's 8-core CPU (4 performance and 4 efficiency cores), and the M2 Air keeps two Thunderbolt or USB 4 ports at 40Gb/s and a MagSafe 3 port, neither of which the Neo has.
