The Sony WH-1000XM6 is the better headphone. In the Sony XM5 vs XM6 matchup, the newer pair cancels a little more noise, sounds cleaner, handles calls better and finally folds. The WH-1000XM5 is the better deal: $298 at Amazon.com, against $438 to $459.99 for the XM6 at Best Buy, Amazon.com and Sony.com when we checked on September 30, 2026. If you already own the XM5, keep it. If you are buying new and spend your day on calls or in airports, pay for the XM6. Everyone else should buy the XM5.
Sony XM5 vs XM6: What Changed and Who Should Upgrade
The XM6 fixes the XM5's hinge, calls and case. Whether those fixes are worth the price gap at today's US prices depends on what you already own.

Nerdspec did not test these headphones. This comparison works from Sony's published specs, US store prices checked on September 30, 2026, and measurements published by SoundGuys in November 2025 and by What Hi-Fi and Tom's Guide, each named where it is used. Store links may earn us a commission. That has no bearing on the verdict.
Sony XM5 vs XM6: the short answer, axis by axis
Seven things decide this, and each has a winner:
- Price: XM5. At the same store the gap was $160 on September 30 (Black, at Amazon.com and at Sony.com). Across the four stores we checked it runs $138 to $162, and $158 to $162 Black to Black. Best Buy matched Amazon.com at $458 for the Black XM6.
- Noise cancelling: XM6, narrowly. SoundGuys measured up to 87% noise reduction against the XM5's 84%.
- Sound: XM6. SoundGuys gives it 4.8 on its MDAQS audio quality score, against 4.2 for the XM5.
- Calls: XM6. Six call mics to the XM5's four.
- Portability: XM6. It folds inward. The XM5 only lays flat.
- Comfort: XM5, by a hair. Its deeper pads suit more head shapes, though reviewers split here.
- Battery: XM6. Same 30-hour rating, but SoundGuys got 37 hours 14 minutes from it against 31 hours 53 minutes from the XM5.
Tom's Guide lands in the same place on its 100-point scorecard: 91 for the XM6, 86 for the XM5.
What actually changed from the XM5 to the XM6, and what didn't
The XM6 launched in May 2025 at $449.99, three years after the XM5 arrived at $399.99. Sony.com now lists the XM6 at $459.99. For that money, Sony changed these things:
- Processor. The HD Noise Canceling Processor QN3, which Sony says runs 7x faster than the QN1. The XM5 pairs that QN1 with Sony's Integrated Processor V1.
- Microphones. 12 in total, up from 8. Six handle your voice on calls, up from four.
- Hinges. The XM6 folds inward, as the older XM4 did. The XM5 only folds flat.
- Case. A clamshell with a magnetic clasp replaces the XM5's zipper case.
- Bluetooth. Version 5.3 with LE Audio, the LC3 codec and Auracast broadcast support. The XM5 is on Bluetooth 5.2.
- EQ. Tom's Guide and What Hi-Fi both count 10 bands in the Sony Sound Connect app for the XM6, up from 5 on the XM5. SoundGuys disagrees: it writes that the XM5 already gives you a 10-band EQ, and Sony's own XM5 page states no band count at all.
- Charging. You can now listen while the headphones charge over USB-C.
What stayed the same matters just as much. Both are rated for 30 hours with noise cancelling on and 40 hours with it off. Both connect to two devices at once. Both support LDAC, AAC and SBC, and neither supports aptX. Neither plays audio over USB-C, so both still ship with a 3.5mm cable for wired listening. Tom's Guide says both use 30mm drivers. Weight barely moves: 250g for the XM5 and 254g for the XM6, per What Hi-Fi. SoundGuys notes that neither has an IP rating, so neither is built for rain or the gym.
Price check: what each costs in the US today
These prices were checked on September 30, 2026. They move by the day, by color and by retailer, so treat them as a snapshot rather than a promise.
- Sony WH-1000XM5: $298 at Amazon.com in Black, Midnight Blue or Smoky Pink. $299.99 at Sony.com, marked down from $399.99, though Sony.com showed it out of stock for delivery that day and offered store pickup only.
- Sony WH-1000XM6: $458 at Best Buy in Black (SKU 6620467). $458 at Amazon.com in Black, or $438 in Midnight Blue. $459.99 at Sony.com.
The XM5's $298 is its everyday street price, not a clearance low. Android Central and TechRadar both reported it at $198 at Amazon over Labor Day 2026, and Android Central saw the same $198 at Best Buy. The XM6 fell to $378 at Amazon during Prime Day 2026, a price Android Authority called the lowest ever tracked on Amazon for the model and which needed a Prime membership. If you can wait for a sale event, wait.
Noise cancelling: 12 mics and the QN3 beat the XM5's V1 and QN1, narrowly
On paper this is the headline upgrade. The QN3 manages 12 microphones in real time, and What Hi-Fi explains that the XM6's Adaptive NC Optimizer keeps adjusting as you move between environments, a step on from the XM5's Auto NC Optimizer. What Hi-Fi also notes that you still can't set the XM6's ANC strength by hand.
In measurement, the gain is small. SoundGuys recorded up to 87% ambient noise reduction from the XM6 against 84% from the XM5 in a comparison last updated in November 2025, and credits much of the difference to the XM6's better passive seal. What Hi-Fi found the XM6 subdues more midrange noise and low rumble. Tom's Guide put it plainly: the XM6 is better, "but it's not as 'better' as you might hope." Its reviewer also found the XM6 struggled with loud, close noises such as a crying child.
The XM6 wins this round. But if noise cancelling is your only reason to replace an XM5, a three-point gain on SoundGuys' chart is a thin reason to spend $438 or more.
Sound quality: the XM6 is cleaner, the XM5 is bassier
In that same November 2025 comparison, SoundGuys measured the XM5 as V-shaped: boosted bass, scooped mids and a bright treble peak around 3kHz that can wear on you over long sessions. The XM6 tones that down with a gentler bass lift and smoother treble. On SoundGuys' MDAQS perceptual scores, the XM6 gets 4.8 overall to the XM5's 4.2, with the biggest gains in timbre and immersiveness.
What Hi-Fi heard more detail and dynamics from the XM6 and calls it a step on from the XM5. Tom's Guide agrees the XM6 is the cleaner listen with clearer vocals, but gives the XM5 a slightly more open soundstage and better instrument separation. Since both use 30mm drivers, the difference comes down to tuning and processing. If you prefer the XM5's bassier tuning, the XM6's EQ, which Tom's Guide counts at 10 bands, gives you more room to dial it back in.
Winner: XM6.
Call quality: six mics help, less than the spec sheet suggests
The XM6 uses six beamforming mics for your voice, three per earcup, against two per earcup on the XM5. What Hi-Fi called the XM6's call quality spectacular and said it clearly beats the XM5. SoundGuys heard the XM6 keep voices more isolated on busy streets and in wind, but judged the gap small. When SoundGuys asked readers to pick between its recorded mic samples, 3,489 votes split 49% for the XM6 and 51% for the XM5.
Winner: XM6. If you spend hours a day on Zoom or Teams calls from noisy places, this is one of the better reasons to pay more.
Design, comfort and the case: the XM6 finally folds
The XM5 dropped the folding hinge the XM4 had, and SoundGuys calls the XM5's hinge design fragile. The XM6 brings folding back, with visible metal reinforcement at the hinge. Not everyone is sold on it: Tom's Guide found the new hinge feels slightly flimsier than the old one.
The case changes too. The XM6's clamshell shuts with a magnet instead of a zipper. What Hi-Fi says it isn't much smaller than the XM5's, since the headphones still lie flat inside.
Comfort is where reviewers disagree. Tom's Guide and What Hi-Fi preferred the XM6's wider headband and firmer, more secure fit for long sessions. SoundGuys found the XM6's pads feel deflated out of the box, the earcups shallow for larger ears, and an ANC mic that can rub against your ear, and it preferred the XM5's deeper padding. Recordingnow.com, which owns both, scored comfort 9.5 out of 10 for the XM5 and 8.5 for the XM6.
One small, welcome fix: the XM6's power button is round and recessed, so you can find it by touch. On the XM5 it is easy to hit the noise cancelling button instead, which Tom's Guide and What Hi-Fi both point out.
Winner: XM6 for portability and controls, XM5 for padding. If you have large ears, buy from a store with an easy return window and try the XM6 at home.
Battery life and charging: same rating, different results
Sony rates both pairs at 30 hours with noise cancelling on and 40 hours with it off, and Tom's Guide and What Hi-Fi confirm the ratings match. In SoundGuys' testing with ANC on, published in November 2025, the XM6 ran 37 hours 14 minutes and the XM5 31 hours 53 minutes.
Both quick-charge to about 3 hours of playback from a 3-minute top-up. Tom's Guide says the XM5 only manages that on a USB Power Delivery charger while the XM6 does it on a regular one, but Sony's own product pages disagree: the XM6 page and the XM5 page both ask for an optional USB-PD compatible AC adapter for that 3-minute charge. Until Sony says otherwise, treat the requirement as the same on both. The XM6 does play music while it charges, which the XM5 cannot do.
Winner: XM6.
Already own the XM5? Keep it unless calls or travel bother you
SoundGuys and What Hi-Fi both tell XM5 owners there is no rush to upgrade, and Tom's Guide calls the XM6 "less a leap up and more a lateral step." The gains are real but incremental, and your XM5 still has strong noise cancelling, LDAC, two-device multipoint and the same Sony Sound Connect app.
Upgrade if one of these is true for you:
- You take calls in noisy places every day.
- You travel light and the XM5's flat shape and bulky case keep getting in the way.
- Your XM5's hinge has cracked or feels loose.
- You want LE Audio and Auracast, and you accept that Auracast is early. SoundGuys found it unreliable in its lab testing.
If none of those apply, keep your money.
Buying new: which one to pick at today's prices
If you own neither, the question is whether $138 to $162 of extra spend buys you enough. For most people who listen on a commute, at a desk or on the couch, it doesn't. The XM5 at $298 gives you noise cancelling SoundGuys measured at 84%, LDAC, multipoint and the same 30-hour rating as the XM6. It even costs less than the older XM4 does at Sony.com.
Pick the XM6 if you would use what it adds: better calls, a folding design, longer real-world battery, charging while you listen, or LE Audio. And whichever you pick, don't pay list price if you can wait. The XM5 was $198 at Amazon over Labor Day 2026, and the XM6 was $378 during Prime Day.
Our pick for most buyers: the Sony WH-1000XM5 on Amazon.com
The Sony WH-1000XM5 at $298 on Amazon.com (checked September 30, 2026) is the pick for most first-time buyers. Sony.com had it at $299.99 the same day, down from its $399.99 list price, but for store pickup only. It is the value choice: more than four years old, still holding its own on noise cancelling according to SoundGuys, and $138 to $162 cheaper than the XM6.
Our pick if you can stretch: the Sony WH-1000XM6 at Best Buy or Amazon.com
The Sony WH-1000XM6 in Black at $458, the same price at Best Buy and at Amazon.com (checked September 30, 2026), is the pick for heavy callers and frequent flyers. Amazon.com had Midnight Blue at $438 the same day and Sony.com listed Black at $459.99. It wins on sound, calls, measured battery and portability.
What about the XM4? XM4 vs XM5 vs XM6 in brief
The WH-1000XM4 is still sold at Sony.com, for $349.99. Sony's product page lists a folding design, the QN1 processor, a 30-hour rating with noise cancelling on, 5 hours of playback from a 10-minute charge, two-device multipoint and five mics for calls. At $349.99 it costs more than the XM5 does at Amazon.com today, which makes it hard to recommend unless you find it well below the XM5's price or you want a folding pair without paying for an XM6.
In three lines: the XM4 only on a deep discount, the XM5 for the best value, the XM6 for the best Sony makes.
Looking for the earbuds? WF-1000XM5 vs WF-1000XM6 is a different comparison
Sony uses the same XM numbers for two product lines. WH models, the WH-1000XM5 and WH-1000XM6, are the over-ear headband headphones covered here. WF models are true wireless earbuds. The WF-1000XM6 earbuds launched on February 12, 2026 at $329.99. If your search for "xm5 vs xm6" was about earbuds, none of the specs, prices or verdicts above apply to them.
Verdict: who should buy which
The XM6 is the better pair of headphones. Whether it is $138 to $162 better is the whole question.
This question keeps coming up in owner threads on Reddit's r/SonyHeadphones and Sony's own forum, and the answer depends on who is asking:
- You own the XM5: keep it, unless daily calls, a failing hinge or tight packing push you to the XM6.
- First-time buyer watching the budget: the XM5 at $298, or wait for a sale.
- You are on calls all day or fly often: the XM6 at $458 in Black, matched by Best Buy and Amazon.com, or better still on sale.
- You have large ears: the XM5, going by SoundGuys' padding findings, unless you can try the XM6 first.
